| For many years, the Bald Eagle had disappeared from the Thousand Islands region of the St. Lawrence River. During the 1940's, 50's and 60's, DDT and mercury poisoning, along with other forms of water pollution, combined to make the eagle's breeding attempts futile. Fortunately, DDT pesticide use was banned in 1972 and mercury and other types of pollution have become more strictly controlled. The majestic birds are finally making a comeback in the Thousand Islands. The first nesting site since 1937 was established near Ivy Lea, Ontario in 1999. In 2007 a second nest site was discovered on the U.S. side of the river. |  |
