  Song of the Marsh

One of the first signs of spring is the distinctive song of the Red-winged Black-bird. The bright red wing patch, trimmed witha yellow stripe, make identification of the otherwise deep black male bird a snap. The female however, tends to blend into the soft browns of the cat tail marshes in which they nest. In late summer, the hide in the marsh and molt their flight feathers for new ones. In early fall, they begin flocking together before migrating South once more.
