| The Gray Wolf, often called the Timber Wolf, make their dens in burrows, natural caves, beneath deadfalls or in other concealed spots. The female comes into estrus once a year, between January and April, when mating occurs. Pups are born nine weeks later. Litter size varies from one pup when times are bad, to a dozen when prey is abundant, although six is the average. Mothers remain at the den nursing the pups for about two months, while being fed by other members of the pack. Pups usually weigh from fifty to sixty pounds by six months. |  |
